Newmont Australian Operations are located in Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and New South Wales with roles in operations, projects, and exploration. Regional Support is provided from our offices in Subiaco and Melbourne.

The Head, External Relations work is essential to shape decision-making of government, media and other stakeholders, positioning Newmont to successfully execute its business strategy within the Australia Business Unit.
This work is critical to the achievement of the operational, growth agenda and license to operate, given its focus on developing the strategies to build Newmont’s reputation and brand. They build influential relationships with external stakeholders- government entities at various levels, regulators, multi-lateral organizations, media & industry leaders, and develop and articulate a consistent approach and messaging to these external audiences on Newmont’s record.
- Build and execute a strategy to influence government and media in ways that materially advance the interests of the company. This includes:
- A plan to elevate the status and influence of the Australia MD.
- A plan to shape government policies, legislation, and funding that are specific to the needs of Newmont. This includes but is not limited to energy policy, taxation/royalty policy, labor relations policies.
- Leverage the enterprise external relations strategy to develop the necessary strategy, standards, processes, and procedures for Australia.
- Establish Australia specific standards and procedures for engaging with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other key external stakeholders to build and maintain reputation.
- Provide comprehensive External relations support to the Executive Australia including providing government relations coverage in Canberra for federal and in NSW, NT, and WA for state government stakeholders, and developing the communications frameworks that includes branding, presentations & media releases.
- Builds relationships and maintains direct contact with relevant associations, industry peers, NGO’s, funding agencies, and other international organizations to help further the company’s external relations aims.
- Develop and implement a framework to manage emerging risk, including scanning for trends in NGO activity, communicating them to affected functions or sites, and developing guidance for mitigation.
- Develop and manage the process of integrating information from SMEs in areas such as Legal, Tax, Finance, Sustainability, Social Performance to ensure alignment. Provide feedback from interactions or on anticipated changes and impact on the BU.
- Set, monitor, and measure functional performance targets. Monitor corrective actions resulting from audits of company social standards.
- Contribute to external relations and related emerging risk insights to the development of the BU and enterprise external relations strategy.
- Lead the consultation, development, and implementation of local strategies to monitor, track and manage emerging risks that impact the global business.
- Integrate the enterprise-level External Relations strategy and plans into the BU execution strategy and country level initiatives.
- Monitor and guide regional External Relations activities to ensure consistent alignment with strategy and goals.
- Support the Australia Exploration and Project teams in all aspects of external relations, including guidance on potential issues and remediation.
- Contribute to Sustainability Reporting initiatives.
- Message sustainability within mining as a priority issue within Newmont including environment, biodiversity, energy usage, new technologies.
- Establish an internal/external network of external relations resources for best-practice and knowledge sharing.
- Lead and manage the Australian External Relations team by providing guidance, direction and coaching to team members.
- Develop the annual budget and financial metrics for the workgroup.
- Degree in Humanities, Economics, Law or related field, plus post graduate degree.
- Mining industry regulations and compliance requirements.
- Newmont’s growth, technical, indigenous affairs, sustainability strategies, principles, and values.
- Australian government authorities and elected representatives where appropriate.
- Advanced level of proficiency in understanding emerging trends and analysis of risk and impact on business.
- Advanced proficiency in influencing outcomes at the highest levels in government and media.
- Advanced level of proficiency in developing business and government relationships and positioning to impact outcomes and positive perceptions of Newmont in country.
- Advanced level of proficiency in integrating multiple workstreams to develop a coordinated, balanced message for external stakeholders.
- Proficiency in the English language; ability to speak a second language is an asset.
- Travel domestic and international may be required.
